Shoe Rotation

If you want to extend the life of your trainers, you could consider adding a shoe rotation into your running programme. This is where you have more than one pair of running shoes available to use. This enables you to switch trainers between runs.

Due to the forces involved in running compressing the shoe’s midsoles, running in the same pair day after day may not allow them to completely decompress before the next use. This results in the shoe wearing down faster and the shoe providing less support and cushioning. Allowing the sole to fully decompress can result in you getting more miles out of them.

During a physiotherapy assessment we will often ask regarding how new or old your trainers are and what level of support you use.

TIP: Many runners often find it a good idea to keep your shoes just for running and not to wear them when you’re out and about as this also significantly limits the decompression time and reduces the miles they can rack up. Similarly some runners prefer different shoes for different types of running. This can be as simple as terrain dependent or even speed versus endurance running sessions.

Essentially, consider giving your shoes a break and utilise multiple pairs.
