Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Knee Osteoarthritis

We always encourage patients to try rehabilitation, physiotherapy, and pain-relief medication first. When these treatments are not enough, joint injections can be a helpful addition to support pain relief and improve activity levels.
In a healthy joint your body produces Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which supports overall joint health. It also helps nourish cartilage cells, provide lubrication and supports shock absorption qualities. In a joint with osteoarthritis, the cells that produce HA reduce in function and so the quality and quantity of HA production is affected.
The injection is placed directly into the knee joint, where it mixes with the natural joint fluid. It helps improve the quality of this fluid, allowing the joint to move more smoothly. This treatment is called viscosupplementation.
Is the injection painful?
Most people find the injection uncomfortable rather than painful. You may feel some pressure or a brief sting, but this usually settles quickly.
You may not notice immediate relief. Improvements in pain and stiffness typically develop gradually over a few weeks after the injection.
The benefits can last for several months, although this varies depending on the severity of your knee osteoarthritis and your activity levels.
Side effects are uncommon. Some people may experience temporary soreness, swelling, or stiffness in the knee after the injection, which usually settles within a few days. As with all injections there is a very small risk of infection
Yes. If your symptoms return, repeat injections can be considered if your clinician feels they are appropriate.
Ostenil Plus injection: ÂŖ300 after an initial appointment to assess for suitability.
